CELBANTouchstone Institute

The Canada-specific English test, written for the way nurses actually work.

CELBAN is a nursing-specific English test accepted by most Canadian provincial regulators. It uses realistic clinical scenarios (patient handover, charting, family conversation) and is cheaper and shorter than IELTS — if you can sit it in a centre that offers it.

Avoid these

Mistakes that cost CELBAN candidates time and money

Read once. The four below are the most expensive errors we see in exam-prep advisor sessions — they're easy to avoid when you know what to watch for.

1

Booking IELTS General then switching to CELBAN — neither is required but both are paid.

2

Ignoring clinical-writing practice because you assume nurse English = exam English.

3

Submitting CELBAN to NMC / AHPRA / US — they do not accept it.

4

Letting CELBAN expire before NNAS + province register you.

Common questions

Top questions about CELBAN

Can I take CELBAN from Africa?
CELBAN test centres are mostly inside Canada. Some partner centres abroad run CELBAN periodically; availability changes. If you are applying from Africa, IELTS Academic is usually the faster route.
Is CELBAN easier than IELTS?
CELBAN uses clinical vocabulary nurses already know and skips the academic-essay format that trips many candidates. Many find it kinder — but it is a real test.
Does every province accept CELBAN?
Most do, including CNO, BCCNM, and NLCN. A few still prefer IELTS. Check your provincial regulator before booking.
How long are CELBAN results valid?
2 years for most provinces — same as IELTS / OET.
Can I combine CELBAN + IELTS?
Usually no. Submit one complete test result. Provinces do not splice sections from different tests.
Is CELBAN accepted by the UK / USA?
No — CELBAN is Canada-specific. NMC, AHPRA, and US state boards do not currently accept it.
