NNASNational Nursing Assessment Service

The single front door for internationally-educated nurses applying to Canada.

Every province (except Quebec) funnels IEN applications through NNAS. It is not a licence or an exam โ€” it is the assessment that lets the province review you. Most Canadian nursing journeys begin here.

After you pass

Advisory Report goes to you and the province. NNAS transmits automatically. You will also see it in your NNAS portal.

Avoid these

Mistakes that cost NNAS candidates time and money

Read once. The four below are the most expensive errors we see in exam-prep advisor sessions โ€” they're easy to avoid when you know what to watch for.

1

Sending transcripts yourself โ€” NNAS rejects candidate-mailed documents.

2

Choosing the wrong nursing category (RN vs RPN vs LPN) upfront.

3

Letting the language test result age past 2 years before province accepts it.

4

Skipping the course-by-course syllabus โ€” NNAS flags an incomplete education file.

Common questions

Top questions about NNAS

Do I need NNAS to work in Quebec?
No โ€” Quebec's nursing regulator (OIIQ) runs its own process. NNAS covers every other province.
How long does NNAS actually take?
Plan 4 โ€“ 6 months from first application to Advisory Report. Transcripts from some African schools are the biggest variable.
Can I apply to multiple provinces?
Yes. The NNAS application has an add-province option; top-up fees apply.
Is NNAS the same as NCLEX?
No. NNAS is credential assessment. NCLEX is the licensing exam most provinces require after you clear NNAS + provincial review.
What if my report comes back "Not Comparable"?
It is not a rejection โ€” the province decides. Many IENs with "Somewhat Comparable" reports still become RNs after bridging, adaptation, or additional exams.
My school is slow โ€” can I still apply?
Open the NNAS file first so the timer starts. Then chase the school. Submitting your own documents to NNAS is usually rejected.
Do I need IELTS or CELBAN?
Most provinces accept both. CELBAN is nursing-specific; IELTS Academic is more widely available. Check your province's exact score requirement before booking.
