How to work abroad as a nurse β without an agent.
Six steps to a UK, USA, Canada, Australia, or Gulf nursing licence using only official regulator and exam-provider sites. Zero agents. Zero hidden fees. Real cost: just the official ones.
- No agents
- No hidden commissions
- Pay official sites directly
From your home country to a foreign nursing licence β without a middleman.
Each step links to the canonical guide. The pattern is the same for every destination: official site β official fee β official confirmation. The moment someone asks you to send money outside that pattern, walk away.
1. Pick your destination first
Don't book any exam before you have a destination. UK NMC, USA NCLEX, Canada NNAS, Australia AHPRA, and Gulf Prometric have completely different rule sets. Pick the country that fits your goal β speed, salary, or long-term immigration β before paying any fee.
Compare destinations2. Book your English test directly
Book IELTS Academic, OET, or your destination's preferred test on the official site (ielts.org / oetqualifications.com). No agent should ever book this for you. Save the candidate number and the receipt PDF.
See exam options3. Apply for credential verification yourself
CGFNS (USA), NNAS (Canada), DataFlow (Gulf), or direct primary-source verification (UK). Open an account on the regulator/evaluator's own site. Pay with your card. Save the case ID β that's your ticket.
See credential services4. Submit to the destination regulator yourself
NMC, your US state board, your Canadian province, AHPRA β every destination has a public application portal. The forms are tedious but standard. Don't pay anyone to "fill them in for you" β they're yours to fill, and the regulator audits them.
See official regulator links5. Sit your licensure exam directly
NCLEX-RN at Pearson VUE. NMC CBT at Pearson VUE. Gulf Prometric at a Prometric centre. Every test centre takes bookings directly from candidates β no middleman. Bring your passport, sit the test, get the result.
See licensure-exam guides6. Apply for the visa via the destination's official channel
UK: Health & Care Worker visa via gov.uk. USA: EB-3 via your sponsoring employer. Canada: Express Entry / PNP via IRCC. Australia: subclass 482/186 via Home Affairs. Every destination has an official visa process β no agent is needed.

Four reasons agents don't help β and often hurt.
Regulators don't talk to agents
NMC, CGFNS, NNAS, DataFlow, AHPRA β none of them have agent partnerships, fast-track tiers, or commission programmes. An agent has zero leverage with the regulator. Every fee, every form, every result is between you and the regulator.
Agents add cost, not speed
A typical agent adds $500β$3,000 in fees on top of the actual regulator costs. The timeline doesn't change because the regulator's internal process doesn't change. You pay more for the same wait.
Most "agents" are illegal sub-agents
In the UK, the NHS has a published Code of Practice on international recruitment. Many "agents" advertising on social media don't comply with it. Working with non-compliant recruiters can complicate your visa.
You're building your own track record
Every form you submit, every fee you pay yourself is documented in your name. That's your audit trail. When the regulator queries something, you can answer β because you submitted it.
When you genuinely need help β get it the right way.
"No agents" doesn't mean "no help". You may need help with: filling forms in technical English, diagnosing card declines, picking between exam options, or knowing whether your specific transcript will satisfy the regulator. For any of those, book a flat-fee advisor session β no commission, no kickback, no fee shared with the regulator. Your money pays for advisor time only.

Frequently asked
Can African nurses really work abroad without an agent?
Yes β and most successful African nurses do. The UK NMC, US state boards, Canadian provinces, AHPRA, and Gulf authorities all accept direct applications from candidates. No regulator gives priority to agent-submitted applications. The official process is the only process.
Are recruitment agencies the same as agents?
No. A legitimate recruitment agency (e.g., NHS Professionals, big US healthcare staffing groups) is paid by the employer, not the candidate. Their job is to match you to a hospital β not to handle your regulator paperwork. Anyone charging YOU a sign-up fee is not a legitimate recruiter.
What about agents who say they have "inside contacts" at the regulator?
They don't. Regulators audit every application and would lose their licence to operate if internal staff were giving paid priority. The "inside contact" pitch is the universal scam tell. See our scam-awareness guide.
Where do I get help if I get stuck without an agent?
Use the official regulator helpline (NMC, CGFNS, NNAS all have them). For coaching on filling forms or fixing payment declines, book a Pathway advisor session β we charge a flat fee for advisor time, never for "regulator paperwork on your behalf".
How long does it take to license abroad without an agent?
Same time as with one. UK: 9β14 months. USA: 12β24 months. Canada: 14β18 months. Australia: 12β18 months. Gulf: 6β9 months. The regulator's internal timeline is what controls β not the route to the regulator.
Does MyNursePathway.com charge to handle my application?
No. We never collect regulator, exam, or evaluator fees. We charge for our own advisor time, document reviews, and exam-prep coaching β published transparently on /pricing. You pay every official fee yourself, on the official site, with your own card.
