Do I need a Social Security Number to take NCLEX?

NCSBN runs NCLEX delivery, but state boards control eligibility. Each board sets its own SSN rules. There is no single "NCLEX-wide" answer.

States that historically allowed no-SSN NCLEX registration include Illinois and New York. Other boards require an SSN as a condition of issuing the Authorization to Test (ATT). Always check your specific board's "International Applicants" page — policies have shifted in recent years.

If you don't have an SSN, you do still have options. Pick a state that allows no-SSN NCLEX registration, sit NCLEX, then pursue an SSN through your work visa once you have an employer offer. Some state boards will issue the licence and let you complete the SSN field later; others won't.
